Nathu La (4,310 m / 14,140 ft) is a high-altitude mountain pass in the Himalayas, connecting Sikkim (India) with Tibet (China). It is one of the three open trading border posts between India and China and holds immense historical significance as part of the ancient Silk Route.

Nathu La is a restricted area, requiring special permits for visitors, but offers breathtaking views, a glimpse into Indo-China relations, and a thrilling high-altitude experience.


Best Time to Visit

  • May to October: Best weather (snow melts, roads are open).

  • Avoid Monsoon (July-August): Landslides can block roads.

  • Winter (Nov-April): Heavy snowfall, often closed for tourists.


How to Reach Nathu La

Nearest Major Points:

  • Gangtok (Capital of Sikkim) – 56 km (2-3 hours drive).

  • Bagdogra Airport (West Bengal) – 170 km (~5-6 hours).

  • New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station – 160 km (~5-6 hours).

Route:

  1. From Gangtok → Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) → Nathu La

    • Permit Checkpoint: At Tsomgo Lake (additional checks for Nathu La).

    • Last Indian Outpost: Sherathang, 5 km before Nathu La.

  2. Only Authorized Vehicles Allowed (Private vehicles not permitted).

  • Foreign Nationals:

    • Not permitted to visit Nathu La (only up to Tsomgo Lake).

  • Only Group Tours Allowed (No solo trips).
